Born  in Essen, Germany, November 1950.
1969-1973 Student at Bochum University (philosophy and social sciences).
1973 MA in social sciences.
1977 PhD in philosophy, Essen University. Title: Normativity and Rationality - The Problem of Practical Reason in Analytical Philosophy.
1983 Habilitation, Karlsruhe University. Title: Formal Dialectics - Towards a Theory of Rational Argumentation.
1974-1986 Assistent professor at Essen University, Dept. of Philosophy.
1986-1988 Heisenberg scholar of the German National Science Foundation (DFG).
1988-1996 Full Professor (tenure) of philosophy at Bremen University.
1994-1995 Fellow in residence at The Netherlands Institute For Advanced Study.
1996- Professor of philosophy at Bayreuth University.
1999-2000 Fellow at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research  (ZiF) at the University of Bielefeld (Research Group Making Choices)
