The following compilation is a list of environmental index values for foliicolous lichen species, based on earlier studies presented by LÜCKING [Abstr. Bot. 21(1): 99-116 (1997)] and updated according to LÜCKING [Trop. Bryol. 15: 45-76 (1998); Trop. Bryol. 16: 209-212 (1999); Rev. Biol. Trop. 47: 287-308 (1999)] and CÁCERES et al. [Biblioth. Lichenol. 75 (in press)]. Thus far, this list is mainly based on research carried out in tropical America and should not be used uncritically in other regions. An future task is its supplementation and modification by more detailed studies especially in the Paleotropics. It is also not expected to work precisely on any collection, but it should be taken into consideration that if the species present in a collection deviate from the expectations, this might also be due to the fact that particular (micro)site conditions are present. The list can likewise be used as a reference for ecological preferences of each species.
Four environmental parameters have been considered: (1) Vegetation type (degree of anthropogenic disturbance); (2) seasonality; (3) altitudinal zonation; (4) microsite (light regime), partly corresponding to vegetation (or site) type. The seasonality indices have been simplified, merging categories "b" and "c" from LÜCKING [Abstr. Bot. 21(1): 99-116 (1997)].The microsite indices are supplemented by relative light intensities, the so-called "diffuse site factor" [ANDERSON, Biol. Rev. 39: 425-486 (1964)]. The corresponding index values for each parameter are as follows:

If a leaf covered by foliicolous lichens is to be assigned to a certain (micro)site type, this can be done qualitatively by determining the dominant taxa present on the leaf and considering their corresponding index values. A quantitative approach requires: (1) Calculation of the relative area cover of each species (compared to the total area cover of all species); (2) multiplication of that value with the corresponding index value of the species; (3) addition of all values in order to obtain an average (micro)site index value M. The latter can then be used to calculate the corresponding relative light intensite or "diffuse site factor" DSF as follows:
DSF = 0.4 × eM,
with DSF = "diffuse site factor, e = Eulerian constant, and M = average (micro)site index value.
